On Sunday afternoon, Chelsea secured an important home win after a 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

Despite an early equaliser from Alexander Isak, goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer moved Chelsea up to fifth place as the matchweek came to a close.

But, how did each Chelsea player perform?

Robert Sanchez – 5.5/10

Although Sanchez wasn’t heavily tested, he once again appeared uncomfortable with the ball at his feet, a recurring theme in his performances. His distribution was below par, completing only 20 out of 40 attempted passes.

Reece James – 7.5/10

Started at left-back today, a position opposite his favoured right-hand side, James put in a solid shift. However, some may argue that he was partly responsible for leaving Isak unmarked or, at the very least, should have instructed Levi Colwill to drop back, leading to Newcastle’s first goal from open play this season. Despite this, James made some crucial interventions, including a vital diving header clearance late in the game to help secure the win.

Levi Colwill – 6.5/10

Colwill had a decent performance, though he’s been known to have clumsy moments on occasion, he got away with one as the foul on Bruno Guimarães just outside the box was not given as a free-kick. One aspect of his game that often flies under the radar is his passing, which has become a key strength. He plays a crucial role in helping Chelsea build from the back, something he’s been doing with increasing confidence.

Wesley Fofana – 7/10

Fofana had an injury scare, but stayed on and made some crucial blocks and interceptions, even after picking up an early yellow card. However, he had some shaky moments during Newcastle’s transitions.

Malo Gusto – 6.5/10

Gusto returned to his preferred right-back position and made some solid tackles against Harvey Barnes. However, he hasn’t quite looked like his usual self of late. Questions remain about his end product; he had several attempts today, but is still searching for his first Chelsea goal.

Moises Caicedo – 7.5/10

Continuing to grow into his role, he’s quietly effective and showing increased consistency. Caicedo made over seven interceptions, tied for the most in the league this season and the first Chelsea midfielder to do so since N’Golo Kante in 2018.

Romeo Lavia – 6.5/10

In his second Premier League start, Lavia did well, winning the ball high up the pitch a few times. Although not at full fitness yet, he’s working well alongside Moises Caicedo, and managed to register an assist.

Cole Palmer – 8/10

Palmer enjoyed more freedom to roam today, contributing with a goal — though Nick Pope could have done better. The execution of the pass to Pedro Neto that created Jackson’s goal was superb and is definitely one of the passes of the season so far.

Pedro Neto – 7/10

Neto engaged in a solid battle with Tino Livramento and provided an assist for the opening goal. He showed fantastic pace to skip past his marker, which created the space for Jackson to score. Other than that, a solid display from the Portugese international.

Noni Madueke – 6/10

Had a quiet performance with a couple of attempts on goal, but nothing substantial came from them. Up against Lewis Hall, where he could have been more aggressive in trying to beat his man, as we know he’s capable of doing.

Nicolas Jackson – 7.5/10

Gave Dan Burn a hard time throughout the match. Jackson had a solid game, consistently receiving the ball deep and progressing it effectively. He scored the opener early on, making it six goals in nine games.

Substitutes

Christopher Nkunku – 6.5/10

Some late drama unfolded with a potential penalty after he went to ground, but the decision was overruled. Aside from that, he pressed well and got himself quickly involved in the game.

Mykhailo Mudryk – 5.5/10

Came on for the last 20 minutes and was mostly quiet, aside from a single attempt on target.

Marc Cucurella – 6/10

Added some energy in the final 10 minutes, replacing Gusto to help see out the match for Chelsea.

Enzo Fernández – 6/10

Like Cucurella, the Argentinian was brought on to help see out the game.
